AI Voice Agent Developer · Top Rated Plus on Upwork

Voice agents that answer before the silence gets awkward

I build production AI voice agents on LiveKit, Pipecat and the OpenAI Realtime API: streaming audio both ways, generation starting before the caller stops talking, and interruptions handled instead of ignored. When a no-code platform stops being enough, this is the rebuild.

Each project names the problem, what I personally built, and the evidence behind it. Where an NDA applies the client is described but not named.

Voice AIUnder NDA

Real-Time AI Voice Agent: One Year in Production, Live on Google Play

Consumer voice AI product, client under NDA

Challenge
Hold a natural spoken conversation with an AI companion in real time, at latency low enough that the pause between turns does not break the illusion.
My role
One-year engagement owning the conversational AI layer end to end: streaming speech recognition, pipelined model calls, speech synthesis, and barge-in handling on a WebSocket backend.
Evidence
Shipped and live on Google Play; client details withheld under NDA.

RAG / EdTechEdTech

Trainizi: AI Course Builder for Nano-Learning

Document-to-course platform for corporate training

Challenge
Turn unstructured source documents into structured, teachable mini-courses without a human rewriting every one by hand.
My role
Six-month build: the RAG pipeline that parses documents into course structure, plus student dashboards and progress tracking.
Evidence
Around 10,000 learners and roughly 5,000 generated mini-courses.

Safety-Critical AIPrivate client

Safety-Critical AI for a Regulated Practice

Healthcare client, details withheld

Challenge
Assist a professional in real time in a setting where one component of the system is safety-critical and a wrong output can cause harm.
My role
Architecture and build across the assistant, the safety layer and the data-retention model, working under the client's compliance regime.
Evidence
Engagement in progress. Further detail available on request, subject to client approval.

Full-StackSocial

Social Network Platform for 60K Registered Users

Consumer social product

Challenge
Build and run a social platform that stays responsive as the user base grows into the tens of thousands.
My role
End-to-end full-stack build covering frontend, backend, real-time features and cloud infrastructure.
Evidence
60,000 registered users in production.

What I build

Voice AI first, and the systems that hold it up

Most engagements start with a voice agent and grow into the retrieval, tooling and platform work around it. Architecture and delivery stay with me either way.

01

AI Voice Agent Development

Production voice agents on LiveKit, Pipecat or the OpenAI Realtime API. Built for sub-second response, clean barge-in, and behaviour that holds up on a real phone line rather than in a demo video.

02

LiveKit Voice Agent Development

LiveKit Agents builds with WebRTC and SIP: self-hosted or LiveKit Cloud, telephony wired in, and per-minute costs a fraction of the managed voice platforms.

03

Pipecat Voice Pipeline Development

Custom real-time pipelines in Pipecat, the open-source Python framework, when you need control over every frame between the microphone and the model.

04

OpenAI Realtime API Development

Speech-to-speech agents on the OpenAI Realtime API over WebRTC or WebSockets, with function calling, and an honest read on when speech-to-speech beats a chained pipeline.

05

Twilio & SIP Voice AI Integration

Put an AI agent on a real phone number. Twilio Media Streams or SIP trunking, inbound and outbound calling, warm transfer to a human, and call recording that satisfies your lawyers.

06

Migrating Off Vapi or Retell

You launched on a managed voice platform, it worked, and now latency, cost or control has become the ceiling. This is the rebuild onto a stack you own.

07

RAG Systems & AI Knowledge Assistants

Retrieval-augmented generation over your own documents, for chat or for voice. Built so answers come from your data, with retrieval quality measured rather than assumed.

08

LLM Integration & AI Agents

Agents, assistants and generative tooling on OpenAI, Claude and LangGraph, with evaluation and cost control, so behaviour holds up outside the demo.

The Platform Around the AI

The product your agent lives inside: React and Next.js on Python, Node.js or Golang, with auth, billing, dashboards and deployment owned by one engineer.

Common situations

The problems clients usually arrive with

If more than one of these sounds familiar, the fix is usually architectural rather than a matter of adding people.

A voice agent with two seconds of dead air before every reply

Callers talking over the agent, and the agent carrying on regardless

Vapi or Retell per-minute costs that stopped making sense at real volume

A voice demo that impressed everyone and never survived real phone lines

An agent that sounds fine until it has to actually look something up

Speech recognition that collapses on accents, names or background noise

A RAG system that retrieves the wrong passages and answers confidently

LLM costs that climbed quietly until someone finally read the invoice

A voice pipeline that works on a laptop and falls over at ten concurrent calls

A contractor handoff that left undocumented code nobody wants to touch

Working directly

Why clients keep coming back

No account managers and no handoff between the person who scoped the work and the person who writes it.

01

A year inside one production voice product

Not a weekend demo. Twelve months owning the conversational layer of a consumer voice AI app that is live on Google Play, including everything that breaks at three in the morning.

02

I will talk you out of a custom build

If Vapi or Retell fits what you need, I will say so and you keep your money. Custom starts paying off at a specific point, and I will show you where that point is for your numbers.

03

Latency treated as a budget, not a hope

Every stage of the pipeline gets measured. You get per-turn numbers before launch and a target agreed in writing, so response time is something we set together rather than something you notice later.

04

Reliable execution, publicly checkable

100% Job Success across every completed Upwork project, 1,383 tracked hours, and Top Rated Plus status. The record is public and you can verify it before you write to me.

How I work

Four stages, and you always know which one you are in

The same process whether the engagement runs two weeks or a year.

01

Understand the business

I ask product-level questions before quoting, so the work is scoped against what the business needs, not just the ticket as written.

02

Architecture in writing

You get the proposed architecture in writing before any code is committed. Disagreements happen on the document, where they are cheap.

03

Delivery in milestones

Work ships in milestones with regular updates, so you always know what has landed and what is next.

04

Documented handoff

Code is documented and handed off cleanly. Your future engineers should not have to reverse-engineer my decisions.

Questions I get asked most

If yours is not here, send it with your enquiry and I will answer it directly.

As a rough guide rather than a quote: a single-purpose agent on an existing platform is typically $4,000 to $12,000, and a custom build on LiveKit or Pipecat with telephony, tool calling and a dashboard usually runs $15,000 to $45,000. Running costs are separate and depend heavily on which speech and voice providers you pick. I quote after a call, because the deciding factor is almost always how many of your systems the agent has to reach rather than the agent itself.

Direct Project Enquiry

Tell me what you are building
